STEM: Build With Apples

Materials: apples, knife, toothpicks, plate

To set up, cut apples into small chunks. Set out apples and toothpicks.
Encourage children to build using just the apple chunks and toothpicks. Challenge them to build different things, such as tall towers, wide buildings, and different shapes. You can even set out pictures of different types of buildings and have children replicate them with apples.
To add measurement into the activity, use whole apples to determine how tall or wide the structures are. engineering

Materials: apples, knife, magnifying glasses, plates or party platter, paper, marker

This multipurpose activity gives students practice with sorting, as well as using new vocabulary and descriptive words.
To prepare, peel and cut up an apple. Separate the parts—flesh, skin, stem, core, seeds. Make signs for the different parts with names and pictures, and place the signs near different plates or sections of the party platter.
Have children sort the apple parts. Then give them magnifying glasses to get a closer look. Ask them how they would describe the parts. Are the parts soft or hard? What colors and shapes are the parts? How would children compare the sizes of the parts? investigation
